About Us - ACEEE ACEEE was founded in 1980 by leading energy researchers who were concerned about U S dependence on foreign oil Since then, by significantly improving energy efficiency across all sectors, the United States has halved its energy use relative to the size of the economy Efficiency now saves more energy each year than the nation uses from any other single energy resource It also saves money
Energy Efficiency Strategies and Upgrades - ACEEE ACEEE advocates using a whole-building approach to saving energy in new and existing buildings A whole-building approach considers the building envelope, HVAC system, water-heating system, appliances, and other equipment in the building and uses energy modeling to identify the most cost-effective opportunities for improving efficiency
One in Four Low-Income Households Spend 15% of Income on Energy Bills ACEEE also examined household energy burdens in 25 of the largest metro areas, finding that a significant share of low-income households face severe energy burdens In 23 of the 25 regions, one in four low-income households have energy bills that exceeded 10% of income, the level at which an energy burden is considered severe
2026 Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings - ACEEE ACEEE is accepting applications for the Harry Misuriello Award to provide an emerging professional with the opportunity to attend the 2026 ACEEE Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings and present a poster highlighting their work or a topic of interest related to building energy codes

2025 State Energy Efficiency Scorecard | ACEEE The State Energy Efficiency Scorecard, now in its 16th edition, ranks states on their policy and program efforts to advance energy efficiency Energy efficiency remains our nation’s least-cost energy resource while also delivering additional benefits such as grid reliability and resilience In the wake of rapidly rising energy prices and electricity bills, many states are recognizing energy
Energy Burden Research - ACEEE Energy bills strain many household budgets, and some far more than others ACEEE’s research has found that low-income, Black, Hispanic, and disadvantaged households all face dramatically higher energy burdens—spending a greater portion of their income on energy bills—than the average household
